Blog Relaunch & 2018 Goals

Yes, hi... it's me. The person, that totally forgot about her blog for the last six months. Well, that's not entirely true. I didn't forget about it but a lot happened and even though I love blogging and it's more like a hobby than an obligation I needed to concentrate on "life stuff" (adulting...UGH!) and invest my free time in my friends and family. But now I have all the free time in the world and wanted to come back with a bang.

I wasn't really happy with my old blog design for a while now and everytime I wrote a post it frustated me to no end. So I decided to relaunch my blog with a new design and I'm really happy with it. The template is courtesy of the very talented Kotryna Bass and her team, who made the installation process so very easy and I could not reccomend them enough.

Since it's still January and I didn't totally break all of my resolutions already (sense the sarcasm) I thought: what better way to come back than with some 2018 goals. My PR internship has ended and I now have a whole stretch of time ahead of me before heading back to uni. Time to reflect, time to regroup and time to get shit done. So here we go:

1. Eat less meat

I feel like this is a resolution on most peoples new years list.

Not that I wasn't concerned for our planet before but within my internship I was confronted with a lot of articles on plastic, sustainable farming, soil health, CO2 emissions etc. One factor that really impacts our environment more than we think is eating meat. To quote PETA:

When land is used to raise animals instead of crops, precious water and soil are lost, trees are cut down to make land for grazing or factory-farm sheds, and untreated animal waste pollutes rivers and streams. In fact, it has such a devastating effect on all aspects of our environment that the Union of Concerned Scientists lists meat-eating as the second-biggest environmental hazard facing the Earth"

Not to mention that the conditions that cattle, pigs and chickens are held in are horrible.
I've been an avid meat eater all my life; that's just the way I grew up. I love cooking, eating out and enjoying food in general. I'm not gonna lie: I like the taste of meat and I will probably never stop eating it completely BUT it is completely unnecessary to integrate meat into every lunch and dinner of the week, especially when you think about what this will do to our planet. So my goal is to minimize my meat intake, try more vegetarian recipes and be more concious about my choices when it comes to buying meat.

2. Live in the moment

I know that sounds very cliche but at the end of last year I realized that whenever I have some exciting plans I always think about the possible Instagrams that could come out of it. And that blew my mind. I want to live more for the moment itself rather than the photo op it is accompanied by. If there's a cute cafe I want to snap or my hair looks good that day, I'm gonna take a photo, sure, but I don't want to become one of those people that plan their days and even lives after Instagram and get frustrated everytime something turns out as "not instagrammable".

3. Read 20 books

I love reading but unfortunately I spend more time scrolling through the same three apps over and over again, than picking up one of the books on my bed side table, that have been sitting there since their purchase 300 million years ago. I always buy books and put them on my "to read" pile and leave them there. Last year I read eleven books and I feel like there is some room for improvement. I want to start making a habit of picking up a book at night instead of resfreshing my Twitter and Instagram feeds until I can't keep my eyes open any longer.

4. Stop feeling bad about having "me time"

If there is one thing I'm good at it's "Me Time". I know how to relax and switch off, I know how to say no to plans, I know how to stop thinking about my woes for an hour or so but what I don't know is how to stop feeling bad about it.

I feel like in the age of #girlboss and #careergoals it is more frowned upon than ever to take time for yourself, do nothing and not feel bad about it. It's lazy. But the truth is, off-time is important; especially for people that struggle with mental health. It keeps them alive, it keeps them functioning. We are supposed to sit on our laptops 24/7 trying to push along our careers, make a lot of money, travel the world and one day write a book about how we worked our butts off for it. But is this really everybodys goal or do we feel pressured to make it our goal?

Sure, I want a nice career and want to make good money and I'm willing to work hard for that but does that  mean that I have to be stressed about what other people are currently doing with their lives  while I'm lying in the bath tub? No. Taking Me Time as a counterpart to working hard is totally fine and we should enjoy it.

5. Take more than one city break

I'm not big on travel. Mostly because I am a shopping addict and can't keep any money in my bank account for longer than two seconds but also because I'm afraid of flying and being away from the comfort of my own home and that something terrible is going to happen while I'm away. So a two week beach holiday in Barbados is basically my worst nightmare. What I do love though are city breaks.

I travelled to Edinburgh for four days last december and it was magical, relaxing and plain old amazing. It was the perfect amount of time to be away for. Since I don't like sand, heat or anything related to a summer holiday I want to take more city breaks instead of feeling socially pressured into lying on a beach. I find exploring cities so much more interesting and exciting than just glazing in the sun for days. The cute little shops, the architecture, the culture, the fooooood, it's all there! I already have some plans on where to go this year but I don't want to jinx it until it is booked (yes, I am that superstitious) so I'm gonna keep it a secret for now.

I hope you enjoyed that "little" glimpse into my mind and my new years goals. Do you have any resolutions for 2018 and have you already broken some or all of them?

xx Laura
